WordPress 4.2 released, 4.1.2 breaks some sites

WordPress 4.2 “Powell” is now available to download or update in your WordPress dashboard.

Version 4.2 is a major release and will not update automatically – you’ll have to go into the Updates page and do it from there. Always keep your WordPress installation up to date but make sure you backup your database first!

All major WordPress releases are named after jazz musicians, and 4.2 is named “Powell” after Bud Powell, a New York pianist who was a leading figure in the development of bebop.

4.1.2 issues

Version 4.2 is the third WordPress update in the last week, after 4.1.2 and 4.1.3. Version 4.1.2 was an important security update but unfortunately contained bugs that caused some users to get 500 Internal Server Errors (including us when we demonstrated a bespoke plugin that we’d built to the client that commissioned it). Version 4.1.3 was rushed out last night to fix this, and sites were starting to update automatically by this morning.  4.2 also contains this bug fix.

So what’s new in 4.2?

Watch the video above to see what’s new: Version 4.2 includes:

  • A new and improved Press This
  • New character support, including Emoji
  • Faster plugin updates
  • New auto embeds
  • The ability to switch themes in the Customiser
